What do you get with the Spurs?

What do you get with the Spurs?

Let us just say that if someone were to take a whole stack of compiles stats from every team in the NBA on every player they would think that the Spurs should go to a retirement home and settle down before they hurt themselves. This is what appears to be on every sheet of paper when the title discussion comes to fruition. The Spurs are always discounted on the premise that they happen to be the oldest team in the NBA. But what you really get with the Spurs is so much more than old age. You get a team full of seasoned veterans that are able to dictate the pace of the game that can only be stemmed through years of play and battles won and lost that have developed a cool head in heated times.

With the seasoned way of the Spurs they almost never panic in what would be considered dire moments. What happens is that you get to see experience displayed at its finest when the Spurs are put under pressure and they pass almost every time with flying colors. The level headed type of play that comes from the Spurs is truly awe inspiring when you can clearly see a different mentality in the waning moments of a close game.

Being involved in some of the most closely contested games in the history of the NBA it is hard to deny that when you look at the Spurs you get something that is so much more than a basketball team. You get a collection of battle tested men who will go and sacrifice their bodies for each other and for the coveted championship. There are teams that will play for the rings and the title of world championship but when you watch the Spurs you get the sense that you are getting something so much more with the passion they play will you feel like you are getting a team that truly wants to enjoy the moment of playing in the NBA.

The Tim Duncan Effect

The Tim Duncan Effect

There are some players that come into the NBA and work their way up the ladder and then they find themselves in the spotlight further down their career path. And then there are the ones that come in with a bang and are expected to be superstars before they even set foot on the court. In the middle there are the highly touted players that are supposed to make an impact on the team they are with and boost the stats or rankings. Some of these players will eventually find themselves in the starting line up or as a team captain. Once this action is applied every once in a while a star will be born. Such was the case with the Spurs’ key player and possibly one of the greatest players to wear the black and silver Tim Duncan.

Tim Duncan is considered by many to be the heart and the soul of the whole team. He is regarded highly by all spurs fans as one of the most dominant players of our generation in his position. One of the big men of the court in the center position Duncan finds himself in the category of elite company with Shaq and Magic Johnson. There are few who are brought up in the conversation of the greatest of all time but the best part about time Duncan is that he was able to earn multiple championships in his run with the Spurs.

The Tim Duncan effect circulates throughout the whole team when he takes the court he brings a kind of energy and motivation that is rarely seen by any professional athlete. It is contagious and you can see it on the court when the Spurs play. Duncan somehow raises the bar on his teammates and brings them to another level.

Sharp Shooter Tony Parker

Sharp Shooter Tony Parker

Tony Parker is better known for his former wife Eva Longoria rather than his prowess on the basketball court. Unfortunately this is a huge mistake that other teams make when they do their scouting report. Fortunately for Tony Parker he can take full advantage of this and dismantle the opposing team from the distance of the adjacent town. Not only is parker able to fire away from the distance of a couple of semis lined up but he is surgical with the ball like a well-trained military sniper. Parker has been one of the best shooters of recent memory with a number of the Spurs’ wins on the board solely because of a Parker game winner.  With the shooting talents that Parker brings to the table the Spurs have been able to take full advantage of the way the opposing teams choose to defend them with their multi-faceted offense.

Not only can parker shoot outside the arc but he is not too shabby on the defensive side of the ball as well. With a handful of steals on his resume he is no slouch when it comes to defending the likes of Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. Parker has been able to thwart the efforts of some of the best in the game with his full pressure defensive plays that make him a nightmare for anyone looking to make a statement out of him. Many of the opposing players who have had the misfortune of being defended by Parker leave winded due to the tenacious defensive pressure.

Parker had seemed like a perfect fit with the Spurs since his move from the French league of basketball the best thing for parker was that he came to the NBA. Now Parker is knocking on the door of becoming a household name in the basketball world. Parker will continue to give the opposing team fits.

Spurs Coaching From Within

Spurs Coaching From Within

Some facts are so distinct that they go without saying when you look at a team. If you are looking at a team and there is some kind of obvious discourse you know that there are internal issues that are going on within the team or in the locker room. Something just won’t seem right when they play there is no so called “gelling” that makes a team function smoothly. On the flip side there are the teams that seem to function on a shared brain. There are the teams that just seem to get it on another level with some kind of unspoken stimulus and response that everyone seems to understand. With the Spurs that is almost exactly what you get when you watch them play. The Spurs seem to have it all figured out from the inside out with the effortless play that have other teams wondering how they know just what to do at the right time.

The suspicion is largely due to the fact that the Spurs breed discipline from within the team with a great mentor system from the veterans to the rookies. There are certain things that go on in practice or in the locker room that are just understood that the veterans just know more than the rookies and the rookies seem to clearly understand that. There is an internal coaching staff on the team who happen to be the players as well that have a strangle hold on the discipline facet of the team which pays dividends when it is crunch time and you can’t afford to lose players to suspensions .

It is apparent that the Spurs operate on another level with the internal coaching. The players seeming to coach the players yield rewards that could amount to multiple world championships.

Point of Offense

Point of Offense

Watching the Spurs over the years there are a few bullet points that seem to repeat themselves when compiling season high stats. Sometimes it is that we just can’t figure out why the Spurs were able to dominate a team that on paper was supposed to be a much better, much younger, much more talented team. It is baffling when you have a team that has the oldest average ager putting the beat down on a team that is half their age. It is fascinating to see it on paper but when you back track and watch the Spurs on television of if you are fortunate enough you watch them live then you begin to understand what exactly is going on. The Spurs have one of the most potent offenses in the game able to score at what appears to be an alarming rate with shots outside the arc or in the paint.

Watching the offense go to work for the Spurs it seems like they have chosen the path of least resistance every time they make a play on the ball. It is truly fascinating the way that Tim Duncan can work the paint when he receives a pass on a cutting run he seems to have radar for the basket almost every time. Granted that Duncan is one of the most dominant players in the last five years he is still able to propel the offense and steal momentum whenever he sees fit.

On the flip side of styles that the Spurs possess there is the outside the arc shooting that carries them to the big leads with the three pointers. What can really demoralize an opposing team is a three pointer that is fired from Tony Parker to drive the final nail in the coffin and officially seal the deal.

Suffocating Defense

Suffocating Defense

If you are looking for a sure fire way to win a game in convincing fashion then you need to have a defense that will make the other team look mediocre at best. That is where the defensive masterminds come into play. The types of players that can take a game and take all the momentum and stuff it into their bag to use whenever they want. The defensive minded player will often times come out on top the larger percentage of the time. A strong defense can act as a thief in the night when the other team thinks they are starting to pull it together then they realize that they are not able to score.  In the case of the Spurs the defense is so suffocating that it drowns out any effort that the opposing team would be willing to make to steal the game from them.

There are certain things that you need to be willing to do in the NBA in order to have a good defense. One thing about having a dominant defense is that it starts with the mentality of the players which needs to be a mindset of self-sacrifice. The players need to have no regard for self-preservation in the sense that they would put themselves in harm’s way to draw out an offensive foul. Taking a charge is a brilliant defensive play that can play dividends in the later minutes.

The Spurs have chosen to take the route of the suffocating defense with the sense of no regards for self-preservation. The Spurs seem to give everything they have on the defensive side of the ball diving and scrambling for loose balls they win on sheer will in the trenches of the defensive battles. With the suffocating defense of the Spurs it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel for other teams.

Future Spurs

Future Spurs

One thing that is definite about the world wide web of sports is that there is a common strand that seems to eventually catch up to every team when they have been together for just too long. That common thread is that eventually you have to replenish the troops with fresh faces. Whether it is the ranks of tennis or golf that are not necessarily team sports faces need to be changed out or forced out by the stronger, younger player. Whatever the case is it is especially true with team sports such is life for the NBA teams. With the Spurs seemingly having the same team forever it is becoming un-deniable that age is becoming a factor. The Spurs manage to pull off the best record in the NBA almost every year in the regular season yet they seem to crumble when the post season rears its ugly face.

Some would say that it is time to start looking to the future for the Spurs and get the young guys before it is too late. One thing that we have noticed about the Spurs is that they seem to place a high value on a teacher student relationship. With Tim Duncan and Tony Parker acting as the head teachers for the rookies there is something to be said about this system. It is an admirable position to be in if you are the Spurs coordinators for offense and defense because you have the extra hands of the guys who have made the decision to step it up as a teacher and mentor to keep the rookies in line.

Perhaps this is the cause for the success that the Spurs have had because of the way that the team comes together as one and help one another. The kind of mentality that can be found in the Spurs is rare to say the least about the character of the team.

Home Crowd Advantage

Home Crowd Advantage

No matter where you are you will be in a good position to encounter a person who is a fan of the Spurs. They have the unique ability to win over any fan who understands basketball. There is something about the style of play that the Spurs bring to the table that draws people in and keeps them there. There are the ways that the Spurs manage to will themselves to a win which people probably find admirable which is why they choose to follow them. It is an inspiring site to watch the Spurs play basketball when they are able to force turnovers in the final seconds and win the crowd that is supposed to be against them. The Spurs seem to find themselves with the home crowd advantage no matter where they are. With the crowd almost always behind them they are a tough team to beat and when at home they are almost impossible to get past.

There is something to be said about Texas and that is the team spirit that the fans have when it come s to their sport of choice. There is a family atmosphere when you go to Texas the state and you instantly pick up on the fact that if you are not with them you are against them. That can make going to a Spurs game as a visitor particularly difficult. The opposing team is not only paying against the guys on the team but they are playing against a stadium full of people. Perhaps that could account to the spurs immaculate records over the past couple of years.

The Spurs have the support of the whole state of Texas crammed into the stadium and almost in every game they playing. This can make for a crazy experience if you are a fan. Hopefully if someone has the opportunity to go to a Spurs game they are rooting for the home team which is almost always the Spurs.

Looking Back on the Spurs

Looking Back on the Spurs

With the Spurs continually a contender in the NBA every year they show no signs of slowing down even if they happen to have the oldest team in the league. This is no exaggeration of the Spurs; they literally have the oldest average age in the entire NBA. With that being said the old guys take it to the young guys every year but then the age catches up to them and they seem to struggle in the post season. Perhaps it is the added mileage that has compacted through the battles of the regular season. Whatever the reason one thing cannot be denied, the Spurs are a legitimate threat to any team in the NBA no matter if it is the regular season or the post season. The old guys are out there lurking and they are always looking to add some new hardware to the trophy case.

The Spurs dominance culminated when they were able to win the NBA championship a couple years back when they were the most dominant team since the Bulls had their runs with Jordan. Perhaps it was that fleeting glory that kept the team together with so many of their players deciding to sign their contracts for long term deals. Either way the best thing for the spurs is to maintain a certain level of confidence in an effort to keep the lingering doubts that are stemmed by old age. The Spurs seem poised to keep their winning ways for at least a few more years to come.

The Spurs seem to defy age year in and year out which is why they are able to take the fresh young crops of players to school every year. One question for the Spurs is how they plan to keep the momentum going with father time right on their heels. Perhaps it will be that the spurs acquire some fresh new talent to supplement for the seasoned veterans.
